Every now and then watching a film a piece of dialogue you hear will stick in your mind. Whether it is something deep and thought provoking, just a humorous quip from a lead character, or a daunting cheesy one-liner that sets the whole mood of the scene there is something about these lines that make or break a film. With as much influence as they have over the mood of the film it is only right that I pay homage with this new periodic feature "Movie Quotes to Commit" to highlight quotes from various films that I find worthy of committing to memory.
My first installment in this series will highlight a quote from an amazing South Korean film from 2003 Oldboy. Laden with hordes of worthy quotes that run the gauntlet of obscene, humorous, deep, and crude Oldboy has a lot to offer. There has always been a single quote that stood out to me in this movie though and that is
Laugh, and the world laughs with you.
Weep, and you weep alone.
This quote comes from Dae-su Oh during his time in prison. I feel this quote best embodies the sadistic ironic nature of Oldboy and has enough practical real world application to have stuck with me ever since.
